From the Boxing Ring to Insurance: Working Hard and Going Beyond Expectations

February is Insurance Careers Month, which raises awareness of career opportunities in insurance and celebrates the industry as a whole. We're kicking things off with Ruben Medina.

Ruben Medina is President of Acrisure Partner Cumbre Insurance Services in Ontario, California. He started as a Producer for personal lines insurance and now coaches his teams to be just as successful. Acrisure's Communications Manager Brittany Bellamy spoke with Ruben to learn more about his insurance career journey.

Brittany: How did you first get started in insurance?

Ruben: My father founded Cumbre in 1984 and he asked me to join the firm in 1992. I was a young father at the time and needed to support my family, so I gave it a shot.

I started in personal lines insurance, but that didn't last very long because while servicing one of our personal lines clients, I went way beyond his expectations and he asked that I become his broker, representing his five McDonald's restaurants in Los Angeles. Now, more than 30 years later, we represent over 500 McDonald's restaurants throughout California and that personal lines client became my mentor and today remains one of my closest friends.

Brittany: Can you talk a bit about how you approach leading others, now that you are President at Cumbre?

Ruben: Of course. I've always been in a leadership role since I left personal lines. I work hard to empower our producers to become the absolute best versions of themselves through leadership coaching, education and mentorship. I'm fortunate to be surrounded by an incredible team that allows me to focus my energy on what I do best.

Brittany: How would you say technology plays a role in what you do?

Ruben: Our technology tools and resources help us continuously add value and serve our clients in a meaningful way. For example, if we need access to expertise or a market for an industry that we don't have a lot of experience with, our technology enables us to collaborate with Partners around the world to make sure they have the best solution.

Brittany: You've been in the insurance industry for a while now – what's your favorite part of your job?

Ruben: What I LOVE the most is the entire process of helping producers to be successful. It's in my nature to want the people around me to be incredibly successful and happy. Coaching is what I do. I've also been a USA Boxing Coach for many years. Whether it's in the ring or in the office, I am inspired by helping others become the best they can be.

I also appreciate the opportunity to become friends with and work with other top producers as an Acrisure Partner. Iron sharpens iron!

Brittany: Do you have any advice for someone considering a career in insurance?

Ruben: My advice is the same advice I give my team – more than fill your space. Regardless of your position today, work hard and go beyond expectations. Care about the people and organizations we serve and one day you'll look back like I do and be amazed. The opportunities within our industry are truly LIMITLESS!
