Hurricane Ian is beginning to rapidly intensify as the storm crosses the high oceanic heat content of the northwestern Caribbean Sea with very low vertical wind shear. Ian is forecast to become a major hurricane by the time it reaches western Cuba and then reach its peak intensity over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico late Tuesday into early Wednesday.
